What I wish I knew in my first month in Bendigo
Three small routines turned a long list of questions into something manageable.
Dimas arrived with a short accommodation booking and a long list of questions. The most useful first step was not trying to solve everything at once. He grouped tasks into what he needed today, this week and later.
A smaller list made the city feel less like a puzzle and more like a place I could learn.
Three reliable reference points
A simple bus practice trip, one grocery list and a community coffee gave him three reliable reference points. He still checked official sources for work rights and services, but local explanations helped him know which questions to ask.
Use official information for rules. Use community experience to understand what to ask next.
A routine is a form of confidence
By the end of the month, Dimas had not ‘figured out Bendigo.’ He had something more realistic: a routine, a few familiar faces and the confidence to offer the next newcomer a coffee.
